Kaleo Missions Staff Standards

As we seek to serve Christ and preserve fellowship within our Kaleo Staff Community, we are intentional about upholding two main Biblical principals as we establish a standard of conduct:

1 Corinthians 11:1 “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.” Members of the Kaleo Staff are not only leaders in job description, but in personal daily walk. As members of the community of believers, we want to demonstrate Christ-like behavior to those who do not know Christ, as well as our brothers and sisters in Christ.

1 Corinthians 10:23 “All things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial. Al things are lawful, but not all things edify.”  In light of our freedom in Christ, members of the Kaleo Staff are not bound by law, but committed to a standard of conduct that prioritizes honoring the Lord through honoring the community of believers. Our standard of excellence and accountability is a form of worship.

Prayer/Staff Meeting:  The time of this may change from week to week depending on the ministry schedule of each group.  However, your site director will establish consistent times for your staff team to meet together for planning, fellowship, Bible study and prayer and as a Kaleo staff member, you are expected to participate in these times.

Personal Relationship with Christ:  One of the easiest things to do with a job like this is to get too tired or too focused on the ministry to really practice the spiritual disciplines that help you develop a strong, abiding relationship with Christ.  We will encourage you to make time to stay connected to the very one who motivates us to serve.

Church Attendance:  We expect each of our staff members to fulfill their role as a member of the body of Christ as they attend a local church each week and participate in fellowship with the local church.

Tasks, not time:  This is an interesting job in that it is not the type of thing that you can clock in and clock out of.  That’s why what we ask of you is not that you work a certain amount of time, but that you accomplish your task as excellently as possible.

Stay within the budget:  In order for us to develop this into a sustainable ministry that can affect the greatest number of people for Christ, we have to make sure that we are responsible with the budget.  If at any point, you feel the need to go beyond the budget you will need to get it approved first.

Self Initiative:  For both your sake and ours, we want you to feel the freedom to take ownership within this ministry.  You are the leaders of these groups and we want you to take the initiative to do what needs to be done.  Please always be on the lookout for what needs to be done, changed or improved.  Take the initiative to talk with leaders, ministry directors and participants about the experiences they are having.

Dress & Appearance:  Staff members have a tremendous opportunity to positively influence visitors and team members, particularly in the area of dress, appearance and language.  Staff is expected to be neat, clean, and modest in dress. Good judgment is expected in selecting attire that is not distracting from the purposes of Kaleo Missions.  If there is a question about appropriateness, the Site Director will discern what is edifying to the community.

Team Effort:  Loners seem to not make it too well in ministry.  We need each other for encouragement, ideas, fellowship and prayer.  Please don’t ever feel that you have to do it all on your own.  Feel free to bring ideas/suggestions/ questions/problems/concerns to the team.

Social Media: As you lead teams throughout the summer they will likely request to friend you/follow you through social media.  As such, your communication with them must reflect Kaleo Staff Standards, and must not speak critically of our ministry partners, your responsibilities with Kaleo Missions, or your team.

Leadership:  As a leader, you are expected to view the missions trip experience with a new perspective.  You now have to notice things that you never noticed before, and take initiative to keep things on track, and moving in a God-honoring direction.

Language:  Staff members are expected to refrain from swearing, crude language, gossip, slander and any other inappropriate language that does not edify encourage or otherwise glorify God.

Alcohol, Tobacco, & Illegal Substances:  Staff members will not possess or use any illegal substances, alcohol and/or tobacco products during your summer of serving with Kaleo Missions.

Technology:  Phones/IPods/Computers/Internet, etc. are incredible resources for our ministry with Kaleo Missions and can tremendously benefit the community.  Make sure that such resources don’t become a hindrance to the effectiveness of your ministry or an impediment to the development of community within the Kaleo Staff Community or service teams (includes but it not limited to, text messaging at inappropriate times, watching movies in the common areas while teams are present, isolating oneself with technology, etc.).

Staff Rooms and Kaleo Site:  To make serving at Kaleo Missions a more enjoyable experience for all, community rooms should be picked up and presentable.  In an effort to remain above reproach and to avoid the appearance of evil, guy staff cannot hang out in the girl staff rooms, and vice versa.

Time Off & Weekends:  Working at Kaleo Missions is not your typical summer job. It involves long hours and living/interacting with other staff in close proximity. Time off for staff should be used for beneficial activities (encouragement, fun, rest, etc.) and discernment should be applied. Activities taking place during time-off shall not interfere with your responsibilities as a staff member, or make you too tired to be fully responsible.  Part of living in community involves a sacrifice of time as well as selfless behaviors that benefit that larger whole.

Safety:  Because you are living and serving in an urban ministry context, you will need to abide by safety rules determined by your Site Director, specific to your location.  At least one other Kaleo staff member needs to know where you are at all times.

Participation:  We expect each member of our staff community to participate in each event of the week and all delegated responsibilities, unless otherwise discussed with your Site Director.  Your enthusiasm and leadership will set an example for the participants and foster a positive tone throughout each week.

Transportation:  As per our mission’s insurance provider, Kaleo Missions Staff is not permitted to transport participants in your personal car.  It is, however, fine for you to ride with the missions team to a ministry site.

Dating:  No exclusive relationships or dating relationships among staff or with team members are allowed during the summer’s ministry.  Displays of public affection will be evaluated and/or addressed as it could indicate an inappropriate relationship and compromise community standards.

Media Consent:  By joining the Kaleo Staff Team, you consent to interview(s), photography, audio recording, video recording and its/their release, publication, exhibition, or reproduction to be used for news, webcasts, promotional purposes, telecasts, advertising, inclusion on web sites, or any other purpose by Kaleo and/or InFaith.

Please note that on your application, you agreed to abide by these community standards.  Failure to abide by these standards may result in you being dismissed from your role as a Kaleo staff member.  Should that occur, you would be responsible for any costs associated with your travel home from the ministry site.  As followers of Christ and leaders in a Christian ministry, we will strive to follow the principles laid out in various passages of the New Testament including the principles in Matthew 18.  However, Kaleo site directors along with Kaleo home office staff will be ultimately responsible to make decisions on issues pertaining to staff.
